Absorptive Capacity and Technology Spillovers: A Quantile Regression Approach

نویسندگان

چکیده

Employing a quantile regression estimator, the study presents new evidence on role of human capital in exploiting technology effects from foreign direct investment (FDI) low-technology industries. A model to capture non-linearity FDI according employees’ educational qualifications was developed. This examined whether workers’ absorptive capacity had different spillover at points conditional distribution. Although found that ability employees with degrees and diplomas exploit exceeds median quantile, it also acknowledges existence both ‘over-skilled’ ‘over-educated’ workers higher As problem shortages mismatch between skills education for still hinders firms applying advanced technologies FDI, this proposes using law make work universities. Firms could inform universities industry’s in-demand regularly get involved development university curriculum ensure graduates are equipped knowledge can be ‘transmitted’

Foreign direct investment, spillovers and absorptive capacity: Evidence from quantile regressions

This paper focuses on the role of absorptive capacity in determining whether or not domestic firms benefit from productivity spillovers from FDI using establishment level data for the UK. We allow for different effects of FDI on establishments located at different quantiles of the productivity distribution by using conditional quantile regression. Overall, while there is some heterogeneity in r...

Ict as a General Purpose Technology: Spillovers, Absorptive Capacity and Productivity Performance

We analyse the impact of ICT spillovers on productivity using company data for the U.S. We account for interand intra-industry spillovers and assess the role played by firm’s absorptive capacity. Our results show that intra-industry ICT spillovers have a contemporaneous negative effect that turns positive 5 years after the initial investment. For inter-industry spillovers both contemporaneous a...

Absorptive capacity, technological opportunity, knowledge spillovers, and innovative effort

This paper analyses the influence of two variables related with industrial structure (technological opportunity and knowledge spillovers) and one management variable (absorptive capacity) on the innovative efforts developed by firms. These relationships are investigated in a total of 406 Spanish manufacturing companies with an established degree of innovative activity. In addition the nature of...

The Many Faces of Absorptive Capacity: Spillovers of Copper Interconnect Technology for Semiconductor Chips

Based on a case study of copper interconnect technology, I propose three kinds of absorptive capacity exist: disciplinary, domain-specific and encoded. Each depends upon distinct mechanisms and organizational tradeoffs. Absorbing disciplinary research requires a firm to actively contribute to the scientific community, while protecting its domain-specific knowledge. Absorbing domain-specific kno...

A Quantile Regression Approach to Firm Growth

This paper explores the firm growth rate distribution in a Gibrat's Law context. The aim is to provide an empirical exploration of the determinants of firm growth. The work is novel in two respects. First, rather than limiting the analysis to focus on the conditional mean growth level, we investigate the complete shape of the distribution. Second, we show that the differences in the firm growth...
